Pilot Installation of the IFF Nitro System at MOWI Hellur, Faroe Islands

The pilot installation of the IFF Nitro system took place at MOWI Hellur in the Faroe Islands. This project aimed to comprehensively test the system’s performance in real-world conditions before its official market launch. The installation, conducted in partnership with local collaborator LEIF MOHR, was a critical step in demonstrating the capabilities of the IFF Nitro system.

CHALLENGE

Verification of Measurement Accuracy in Real-World Conditions

The primary challenge was to test the accuracy and responsiveness of the IFF Nitro system in measuring critical water parameters, including Total Dissolved Gas Pressure (TDGP), Oxygen (O₂), Carbon Dioxide (CO₂), Nitrogen (N₂), pH, and Oxidation-Reduction Potential (ORP). Additionally, the system’s sensor regeneration capabilities and resilience to biofouling under farm conditions required evaluation. The installation also involved testing the clogging rate of the 50μm filter and integrating the system with the farm’s existing control setup.

SOLUTION

IFF Nitro Basic Installation

The solution was the IFF Nitro Basic system, configured to monitor the following parameters:

  • TDGP

  • O₂

  • CO₂

  • N₂

  • pH

  • ORP


Key features of the installation included:

  • Full integration with the farm’s control center for real-time data visualization.

  • Cloud connectivity for continuous data transmission.

  • Collaboration with LEIF MOHR for seamless implementation.


The system was operational within two days, including visualization setup. While this pilot model lacked automatic filter flushing, it enabled valuable testing of clogging rates under biologically active water conditions.

RESULTS

Accurate Measurements and Operational Stability

The system’s sensor array met all performance expectations, achieving precise and fast measurements of TDGP, O₂, CO₂, N₂, pH, and ORP. Initial sensor regeneration intervals were set to 24 hours but were optimized to 72 hours based on system performance, with no deviations detected.


Ammonia Experiment

An experiment to calculate ammonia concentration from nitrogen dynamics demonstrated the system’s advanced analytical capabilities:


  • The measurement loop was sealed with biologically active water, including residual ammonia.

  • Over 60 hours, O₂ levels dropped to zero, and N₂ content increased by 1.5 mg/L, stabilizing thereafter.

  • Using stoichiometric equations, the ammonia content was calculated at 1.94 mg/L NH₄⁺, with a measured value of 1.83 mg/L NH₄⁺, showing a 6% deviation.

  • Subsequent laboratory tests revealed that this deviation could be minimized by including ammonia in the nitrogen calculations, reducing discrepancies to less than 1%.

CONCLUSION

Unprecedented Precision for Aquaculture

The IFF Nitro system demonstrated unparalleled accuracy in measuring TDGP, O₂, and CO₂, enabling precise control of dissolved nitrogen. The system’s capabilities include:

Advanced Energy Utilization Optimization in Aquaculture

Oxygen is typically dosed based on oxygen level measurements. Our innovative system not only determines the extent to which adding oxygen is beneficial (TDGP) but also explains why (N₂ and CO₂ levels). Additionally, the system enables efficient management of the degassing process, significantly reducing the operational costs of fish farming.
